JUST IN:Nets Seeking Assistance From Rival During Head Coach Search?

Under Kevin Ollie’s leadership, the Brooklyn Nets have gone 9-14 after finishing 21-33 under previous head coach Jacque Vaughn.

Their shot distribution has become less random and more structured as a result of the latter. Cam Thomas has become the primary playmaker, Dennis Schroder the secondary playmaker, and Mikal Bridges comfortable in a tertiary scoring role, establishing a hierarchy that was sorely absent. Bridges has really taken up his 3-and-D position from his time with the Phoenix Suns.

But the Nets are ranked twenty-seventh in defensive field goal percentage (68.2), twenty-fourth in effective field goal percentage (52.6), and twenty-third in points per touch (.262) since the All-Star Break.

Ollie might therefore not get his temporary tag taken off.

Nets Seeking Knicks Assistance During Head Coach Hunt?
According to Yahoo Sports insider Jake Fischer, “there’s a growing sense around the league that Brooklyn will consider some of the same younger, first-time head coaches as the (Washington) Wizards and (Charlotte) Hornets, in addition to experienced names.”

There are multiple head coach prospects that the Hornets are considering. They were given permission to speak with lead assistants David Adelman of the Denver Nuggets, Charles Lee of the Boston Celtics, Jordi Fernandez of the Sacramento Kings, and Kevin Young of the Phoenix Suns this week. They’ve also been connected to Utah Jazz head assistant Lamar Skeeter and Miami Heat lead assistant Chris Quinn.

The 51-year-old Ollie is neither the young or seasoned head coach that the Nets are looking for. Johnnie Bryant, the assistant coach of the New York Knicks, does, though. Bryant is only 38 years old, yet he has no prior head coaching experience.

According to Fischer, “Johnnie Bryant, the assistant for the Knicks, has also been mentioned as a possible first-time head coaching candidate in Brooklyn.”

Bryant began his coaching career in 2014, working for the Utah Jazz under Quin Snyder. He joined Tom Thibodeau’s staff in 2020. He has therefore gained knowledge from two of the NBA’s top defensive coordinators. The Oakland native is close with Donovan Mitchell and Damian Lillard as well. This final detail has nothing to do with his coaching background. Still, it’s noteworthy how much respect top players have shown him.

A former standout for the Utah Utes, he has been considered by the Jazz and his alma institution as a head coach.

A Coach for a Player
The best description of Bryant’s value as a coach may have come from Alec Burks, who the Knicks hired in 2020.

“I felt like I was working hard,” Burks remarked in a Stefan Bondy interview with the Daily News. But he made it clear to me that success in this league requires a different kind of play.
And I believe he elevated me to that degree.

“He is an accomplished basketball player. He looked over the game. He saw your movie, got to know you personally, and saw what you had going on. He then merely preaches what he knows and improves you as a result.

Burks goes on, “He gets to know your game, gets to know you as a person.” When he learns to know you off the court, I believe it will be easier on the court. He takes that very seriously.

Having said that, Bryant might be the perfect addition to Brooklyn.

The Nets have experienced multiple widely reported incidents of a player and head coach falling out since 2020. Moreover, the team’s camaraderie and level of competition have frequently been poor. If Bryant truly cares about his players’ lives outside of the court, then they should be motivated to play for him. That might ultimately result in them fiercely defending one another as well.

The Nets aren’t exactly a young club, to sum up. But there are several players striving to develop wings inside the cocoon. There are yet some who are prepared to leave the nest and take flight. Like every other NBA team, Brooklyn must make player development investments.

How Will the Playoff Rotation Affect the Celtics?
April 6, 2024

It’s time to start considering clubs in a playoff environment as the NBA playoffs get near. Every team shortens its rotation and plays more of its studs throughout the playoffs. It’s interesting to see how this affects bench rotation guys. Grant Williams had a large decrease in playing time for the Celtics during the playoffs the previous season. Of course, a lot of these rotation adjustments are influenced by series performance and matchups. We still have a decent notion of how the Celtics rotation will alter during the playoffs, though, considering what we already know about these guys and historical patterns. Now let’s get started.
